Web Design 101

Here's the 101 on coming up with a good design. these are some strong points i've come to realize. that if you focus on these, you can make your designs more attractive.

Imagery-good images are essential for a site. If you're getting images insist on high res ones. ones taken by a photographer are preferable. Of course there are some instances where you wont be able to have much or any imagery. in this case you'll have to rely on the other 3 points. especially color

Layout - your layout will depend on the type of site you're designing of course. Before starting, browse through and find some similar sites of the same industry/field. this is not to copy those sites but to get an idea of the content of you site and how it is usually presented. should be the 1st thing you draw, even before getting onto the pc. take into consideration UI principles like minimum mouse movement, minimum, page heat areas when drawing your layout.

Colors - color provides flavour to the site. your site should have a base color. and 2 other sub colors at the most. the sub colors will be an accent to the site. More colors than than that and your site will look amatur. also keep in mind your text color will have to be a contrasting color against your page color.

Content - content can make or break a site. when it comes to text, the size, style and and alighnment is important. dont just copy and paste content off a document into a site u designed. it has to be planned out and the content must be made presentable. remember, if it wasnt for the content why would you need a site at all.

PS: Many of these are inter-related most of the time. for instance if you're using an image of your background, that dominant color in that will become your base color. There are really no hard and fast rules. While keeping the above in the back of your mind, go with the flow.
